Jean Todt wants consensus over the cost control issue – Formula 1 news
Jean Todt, who is the current president for FIA, wants all Formula 1 teams to come together over discussing the cost cutting issue before the Concorde Agreement is finalised.
As the current season is reaching its end, the FIA has been busy introducing new regulations for the next season and new engine regulations that will be implemented from the 2014 F1 season onwards. On one hand, a particular section of the Concorde Agreement
is the Resource Restriction Agreement (RRA) which requires the teams to control the amount of money they spend on the cars while at the same time FIA has implemented an entry fee increase to enter next year’s championship.
The Red Bull Racing team and its sister team Toro Rosso had expressed their disagreement over the RRA while they had no choice but to accept the fee increase even though they will be the highest paying team as they have the most points in the constructors’
title this year.
With the ongoing meetings about the Concorde Agreement which involve the teams and the FIA, Todt said, “We have to do things step by step. I am in favour of reducing the costs, improving the show, and implementing new technologies. So now we are seeing that
we are on the way to having these working groups, advisory strategy group and the F1 Commission, and for me it has to be dealt with inside of those groups.”
Red Bull’s reason for the conflict was that RRA is not uniform as it does not include all the elements of F1 under cost cutting. Despite their consenting to the fee increase, team principal for Red Bull, Christian Horner, had admitted that both regulations
were in contrast to each other.
Todt has repeatedly insisted that he does not want be dictator even though he has been advised by the previous FIA president, Max Mosley, to be more confrontational. He wants to have a consensus over the issue from all the teams. He does not intend to pressurise
any one of them.
“We will sit altogether and then we will do what the majority will decide on, which I feel is the most transparent way to run our business,” Todt added.
