Jeanette Ottesen pockets Women’s 100m butterfly gold: Day four – European SC Swimming Championships
Danish Butterfly veteran, Jeanette Ottesen impressed the aquatic crowd by pocketing gold medal of Women’s 100m butterfly on day four of the 2011 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Szczecin, Poland on Sunday, December 11.
The 23-year-old Ottesen displayed her wonderful efforts in the 100m discipline and proved her eligibility for the title of the event. With her impeccable swim, she shattered hopes of her competitors by occupying the crown of the butterfly swim.
Ottesen was the first swimmer to kick off from the starting blocks, which provided her competitive edge over her opponents. With her powerful strokes and gruelling strategy, she became top contender for gold medal in the first round.
She completed her initial round of the race in a fastest time of 25.63 seconds and stayed considerably ahead of her competitors. She was followed by Jemma Lowe of Great Britain, who remained almost one seconds slower from her in the initial 50 metres of
the swim and ended her round with an effort of 26.54 seconds.
Ilaria Bianchi of Italy emerged as the third fastest swimmer of the swim as she remained 0.75 seconds behind her former finisher and completed her equivalent distance in a time of 27.29 seconds.
Ottesen continued her dominance in the following round, where she ended her second half of the race in a gold winning time of 56.22 seconds. Her title claiming effort remained just 1.17 seconds slower from the European and World record of 55.05 seconds,
made by Diane Bui Duyet in 2009.
Subsequently, Lowe geared up her efforts in the final 50 metres of the swim but she remained nearly two strokes behind the old medallist. She was 0.45 seconds slower than her preceding finisher and hit the wall in a second fastest time of 56.67 seconds.
She was trailed by Bianchi, who was 0.75 seconds behind the second position holder and transpired on the finishing end with a nice timing of 57.42 seconds for bronze medal.
Ottesen received a huge round of applause for her scintillating effort from the
audience while the championship ended after the conclusion of all listed events.
