Jeanine Cicognini beats Laura Vana in Women’s Singles quarter-final of Lithuanian International 2011
Switzerland’s Jeanine Cicognini has thrashed Estonia’s Laura Vana in the Women’s Singles quarter-final of the Lithuanian International 2011, in Lithuania. The encounter was held on Saturday, June 11.
The top seed Swiss, who is currently ranked at the Number 46 spot in the world rankings of the Women’s Singles category, emerged as the winner after a nail biting three-set fight, which took 42 minutes of superb badminton from both shuttlers.
Jeanine opened her campaign against Laura in thrilling fashion, as she played with great precision and finished the rallies by playing wonderful strokes at perfect places. She created gaps in her opponent’s court by moving in all corners of the court.
Laura tried to stop the aggressive run of her opponent by increasing her speed, but the Swiss was quicker in picking the bird. The top seed was anticipating the strokes of her opponent by utilising her extensive experience and clinched the opening set by
a 21-17 difference in 13 minutes.
Frowned by the loss of the first set, Laura changed her technique in the following game. She started to play straight and cross court net strokes to force her rival to come forward from the base line. At the interval, Laura was leading the set by a three-point
lead of 11-8.
After the one-minute break, Laura continued with the same tactics which worked well, as she was successful in creating gaps in her opponent’s court. Jeanine lost the second game with a close difference of 18-21, in 15 minutes.
The final set was absolutely thrilling in the start, as both ladies could not manage a comfortable lead until the interval in the game. After getting back into the court from the break, the Swiss changed her strategy and started to push her challenger in
the corners of the rear court.
At the ending phase of the game, the top seed managed to clinch the set by a 21-16 difference, in 14 minutes. The concluding score of the interesting 42-minute match was 21-17, 18-21 and 21-16.
In the semi-final, Jeanine will be up against Ragna Ingolfsdottir of Iceland, who emerged as the winner against Akvile Stapusaityte of Lithuania, in the quarter-final contest.
