Jed Hoyer discusses managerial candidates for Cubs
At the moment there are four candidates for the managerial position open with the Chicago Cubs. Not only do they have the experience with their relative clubs as coaches, but they add a lot specialty to the squads they train and serve. General Manager of
the Cubs, Jed Hoyer, took the opportunity on Friday, November 11, to talk about the candidates and their potential as the next face of the club.
Many of these candidates applied for the vacant Boston Red Sox position and that brings a lot of facts in front of the top management brass at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Bench Coach Pete Mackanin for the Philadelphia Phillies, hitting Coach Dale Sveum for
the Milwaukee Brewers and bench Coach Sandy Alomar Jr. for the Cleveland Indians have all been trying for the manager’s position in Boston and they were all prepared for the Cubs’ interview when they got the call.
Mike Maddux was the only personality to not apply for the Red Sox. The Texas Rangers pitching coach likes to live near his family in Dallas which explains his preference to the Cubs. The Chicago General Manager had a few words for the Boston candidates though.
"It was clear they'd done their homework and cared about the process," Hoyer said.
As for who tops the list as the right leader, Hoyer avoided giving a plain answer. He gave a observant assessment of the situation.
"Totally open for debate," he said. "We're going to get back and have those discussions, and probably have some follow up conversations. We've spent a lot of time with these candidates, but now we can think about follow up conversations, and was there a
hole in the process we want to cover up, and we can do that. We need to have those conversations before we can move forward."
The Cubs are currently hoping to tie a good fit manager to the lineup as the General Managers’ Meeting nears. Hoyer has been working hard with President of Baseball Operations, Theo Epstein, in wrapping up the manager selection process. A successor to Mike
Quade will have a lot of expectations from the crowd in Chicago. Which one of the four is more capable of meeting requirements, is the real question.
