Jed Lowrie’s 4 ABs leads Boston to a 10 – 8 victory over the New York Yankees (pt 2)
The season long American League is finally coming down to a close and when the New York Yankees were going to face off with their bitter rivals on Friday night, many knew there was going to be some serious action coming their way. The Yankee Stadium crowd
amassed to watch their home team engage the Boston Red Sox in an encounter that marked the first fixture of the 3-game series.
The hosts have been on a quest to reclaim the East Division title. They’re locked in a neck to neck race with the Tampa Bay Rays, who prior to this match, lied on a
1/2 difference scale. The Yanks needed a win desperately, to keep the other team off their backs and to create a decent lead in the process.
The match began with the Boston team on the batting plate. Andy Pettitte starred for the Yanks on the mound. His constructive pitching and Josh Beckett’s economical throws saved both sides from a concession in the first inning. Unfortunately for the Yankees,
that wasn’t to be the case in the top 2nd as the Red Sox pushed the accelerator to the ground with Jed Lowrie, who quelled the host’s ambition with an amazing strike in the innings.
Adrian Beltre started off the innings with a grounder out to the third. David Oritz followed that up with a double to the deep centre. In came Mike Lowell, who got to the first base on an error by right fielder, Nick Swisher. With the first two basses full,
Lowrie walked on to the strike zone and smashed a blistering home run, 356 feet towards the right. This got the two baseman and Jed off to 3 runs for their team, pushing the Yankees into a pressure plate stance.
With the Boston side 3 – 0 up, there was much distinction in the initiative. The visitors were fighting for pride and honour, while the Yankees mustered must of their shots out of compulsion. The New York side has been a conquest to take the league title
and desperation was a sign that was absent from the World Series champions as the hitting faction put on a great exhibition to see themselves climb back up the later innings to pose a challenge.
Curtis Granderson scored the first New York run and that came in the bottom 3rd. Much of the home town hitters seemed quite till the 3rd inning when it took the in-form Granderson to make an appealing stand for the Yanks. He banged
a 395 feet mammoth shot over the right side to put the ball club on 1.
The score was 3-1 in favour of Boston and it looked like the action was going to pick up again and that’s exactly what transpired when the Red Sox got back to their scoring ways in the top 4th. David Oritz started the show with a single to the
shallow right centre. Next up was Mike Lowell, who moved to the first base from a single to the left. Man of the match, Jed Lowrie then showed up to single down the right centre side to move the two base occupants up on the diamond. Darnell McDonald came up
to the plate after Bill Hall fouled out and the batter bashed a decent double through the left side to get both Oritz and Lowell through the last checkpoint for 2 runs.
The visitors found themselves 5 runs up and the inning was not over yet. Lowire was on the third base, while McDonald was on the second bag. It took Marco Scutaro to get both men to the dugout with runs as he struck a 2 RBI (Runs Batted In) single to the
centre. Both basemen converted their positions for scores and the Yankees were reeling then with 6 runs.
