  1. The 1990 uses the renix engine control system. The 1992 is the H.O. 4lt that uses a different engine management system. you would need to swap the whole wiring harness and computer to use the 1990 engine in a 1992 cherokee, also the cooling systems are different.

  2. Should be an easy swap.

  3. If the engine codes are the same then most likly yes.

  4. well if you are concerned about it not fitting you can always just use the long block (block and head) you can swap the intake and exhaust manifolds over... it is very easy to do on those 4.0s since the intake and exhaust are bolted on the same side of the head..

  5. they should be fine - Jeep made that same inline for YEARS without changing much at all.

there are tons of sites on the web, but you can also pull up any online auto parts store, look up the engine for each and see if its the same part number. Should be.

three primary concerns - where are the engine mounts, do they have the same bolt pattern where it attaches to the bell housing (between engine and transmission) and does the engine have the same spline count/type on its out put shaft.

If teh part numbers are the same, those are the same.
