Jeev Milkha Singh aims to land the European Tour Avantha Masters title on the home course
Indian veteran golfer Jeev Milkha Sigh is all charged up for the third episode of Avantha Masters returning to the DLF Golf and Country Club and predicts a bright future of the sport in the country.
Often regarded as the pioneer of the sport in the country, Singh has a stellar record in his professional career and has done a splendid job in promoting the sport in the south eastern nation.
Predominantly the home of cricket, a legacy of the British rule in the subcontinent, golf receives little appreciation from the local populace but Singh insists that the recent surge in the popularity of the sport will go a long way in establishing it as a mainstream sport in the country.
"It's fantastic for Indian golf," said the 40 year old. "To have a European Tour event on a good golf course like the DLF for three years in a row is great. Golf is the fastest growing sport in our country and I think in the future we're going to have a lot more tournaments and the prize fund is going to increase too".
"Young kids who want to see the top players have an opportunity to come and watch professionals, and when they see their standard of play, they know what they need to work on," he continued.
Son of the former Olympic sprinter Milkha Singh, the veteran has no fewer than 19 professional titles in his name, with three European Tour victories.
He won his maiden European Tour title the Volvo China Open in the year 2006 to become the second Indian player after Arjun Atwal.
His third and last European Tour victory came in the year 2008 when he landed the Bank Austria Golfopen title, taking over Simon Wakefield by one stroke.
Singh has won six Asian Tour titles in his stellar career and no fewer than four on the Japan Tour.
Singh lamented the fact that the world has taken a severe blow from the economic recession but insisted that India has been doing well despite the gory situation.
He has never won a title on the home ground, something which he aims to do in this week’s Avantha Masters.
Singh also lauded the course and warned of the high winds which pick up at this time of the year.
