Jeev Milkha Singh shares the eighth position after round one of the Shubhkamna Champions
Jeev Milkha Singh carded a three-under par 69, in the opening round of the inaugural edition of the Shubhkamna Champions golf tournament, to take the share of the eighth position, on Friday, December 21, 2012.
The tournament is being staged at the Noida Golf Club, featuring a total of 30 players from different parts of the world, including 10 International tour members and 20 winners of 2012 PGTI tournaments.
Singh himself is hosting the event, and has reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of the two-time Asian Tour winner in 2012, Gaganjeet Bhullar, the 2002 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner, Jyoti Randhawa, Shiv Kapur and Anirban Lahiri.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, Singh expressed his pleasure in staging the ‘tournament of champions’ in India.
He stated that he was pleased to see people coming to the course to watch their favourite players contending against each other live on the course.
He also expressed his wish to take the tournament to the next level, by getting it sanctioned by the Asian Tour.
According to him, the idea of bringing together the champions has achieved huge success on the European Tour and the US PGA Tour.
Therefore, the Shubhkamna Champions can play a similar role on the Asian Tour, by attracting the past and the current champions on the circuit.
"The real business is next two days, but the scores were great today and the conditions excellent. More than anything the response to this event is overwhelming and I want to take it to next level, maybe Asian Tour," said Jeev.
Singh also said that he was pleased to see his father, the great Milkha Singh, competing in the Pro-Am event, prior to the start of the official tournament.
"It was nice of my dad to come and play 18 holes. He is 82 years old. He had a great day and I am proud how fit he is," said Jeev.
Daniel Chopra, in the meantime, fired an eight-under par 64, to take a two-stroke lead over Ajeetesh Sandhu and Anura Rohana. His performance included eight birdies, one eagle and two bogeys.
