Jeev Milkha Singh still struggles with his putter at the HSBC Champions
Entering the fourth World Golf Championship of the season, the HSBC Champions, Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh was confident that his continuous change of putter will help him post a good score in the tournament this week.
In each of the last three weeks, he used three different putters and he still failed to regain his form on the greens. He carded a level-par 72 in the opening round on Thursday.
The two-time Asian Tour number one recorded only two birdies against the same number of bogeys to tie for the 34th position at the Mission Hills Golf Club.
“I hit the ball really well. Just trying to get my short game going. I’ve changed my putter last three weeks three times. I’ll just have to make sure I’ve got the right one. I’ve got to work on it mentally and build up on the trust,” Singh said.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, he said that he did not feel comfortable with the long putters. That is the reason why he reverted back to the traditional putter.
According to him, he is gradually building his confidence in his short game and he will soon be able to post some good scores on the leaderboard.
Furthermore, he also believes that his game off the tee has improved in the last few weeks. Therefore, he only needs to improve his game on the greens, in order to return to his winning form.
“I’m pretty happy with the game. Hopefully, I get it right on one of these weeks (with the putter),” he said. “Otherwise, hitting the ball well and everything else is good. Just need to sharpen the short game”.
He added, “I’m going back to putting green … I’ve been working quite hard. It’s just about the trust”.
He also said that the five par-five holes provide the participants an opportunity to record low scores. However, accuracy will be the key to success at the difficult Olazabal Course at Mission Hills.
Singh is currently seven strokes behind the co-leaders, Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott. Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Peter Hanson and Shane Lowry shared the third spot after posting a six-under par 66 each.
