Jeev Milkha Singh to host the champions at the Shubhkamna Champions golf
The 2012 season saw Jeev Milkha Singh proposing an idea of staging the “tournament of champions”. The Indian star discussed the proposal with his sponsors in March.
His efforts finally paid him off, as his sponsors agreed to stage the 54-hole Shubhkamna Champions golf from December 21 to 23, 2012.
The tournament will be played at the Noida Golf course, offering a total prize fund of INR6 million, to the participants.
The event has reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of Daniel Chopra, the 2002 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner, Jyoti Randhawa, the 2005 Asian Tour Rookie of the Year, Shiv Kapur, the two-time Asian Tour winner last season, Gaganjeet Bhullar,
and Anirban Lahiri.
Arjun Atwal, who usually avoids playing golf in the month of December, also agreed to participate in the event. While making his confirmation, he said that it will be a great experience to lead the young generation in India.
“This is home. Getting the leading Indian golfers back in India to play an event is a great experience for the competitors and the fans," he said.
He also revealed that he watched the PGTI Qualifying School in Kolkata, and was impressed by new pool of youngsters getting ready to step on bigger stages.
"They were very professional about their way - how disciplined they were and how they conducted their workout,” he said.
Singh, the host of the event, said that he wanted to convey a message to the young generation to come forward and join the winning league in professional golf.
"This is a tournament of champions. I wanted to make the event aspirational and send a message to the youngsters," said Jeev.
The European Tour’s Scottish Open winner also said that his aim in the event will be to enjoy the week along with his friends, rather than taking home the prestigious trophy.
"I expect to have a good time and give a good time to the pros and it's for them to make some money. I think it would be unfair to bake the cake and eat it too,” he said.
