Jeeve Milkha Singh sets the pace for first round of Irish Open
Jeeve Milkha Singh smashed a score of eight-under-par in the opening round of European Tour’s Irish Open to surge into a temporary lead. The tournament, presented by Discover Ireland, is taking place at the par-71 Killarney Golf & Fishing Club in Killarney,
Ireland.
Singh teed-off from the front and reeled six birdies and one eagle to compile the lowest score of the course. The player, who hails from India, clamped two birdies in the front alongside a beautiful ace and marveled the crowd with his consistent game. He
wrapped the front with a score of 31, which set his mood for the rest of the day.
Similar consistency and accuracy was seen on the back nine, where the player birdied three successive holes, starting from the par-3 tenth. He picked one more and wrapped the day with a 63.
“I don't know whether that was a good thing or a bad thing, but it did cross my mind and I gave it a run, but I'm still happy with eight under. I think it's one of the best putting rounds I've ever had,” said Singh on his way to the clubhouse.
Frenchman Alexandre Kaleka finished two strokes behind the leader with a score of 65. The player left six holes at par and dropped a shot against two birdies. However, just when the crowd were starting to render his performance mediocre, the player shocked
them with his prowess on the back nine. He fired five back-to-back birdies starting from the par-4, 12th hole and sealed the day with a beautiful seven footer.
A three-way tie was seen for third place on the leaderboard, which included Michael Campbell, Christian Nilsson and Marcel Siem.
Like Kaleka, Campbell also kicked off with a slow start, but perked up as soon as he stepped onto the back. The Aussie picked four birdies and one eagle to seal the day with a 66. A similar performance was given by Nilsson who dropped a shot in the start
and later birdied six holes at the back.
