Jeff Fisher to play more active role in St. Louis Rams’ defensive training – NFL News
St. Louis Rams’ head coach, Jeff Fisher, has said that he is going to play more active role in training the team’s defence after the National Football League (NFL) placed an indefinite ban on their defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams.
While talking to the reporters on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, he said that he would take more active role than he had planned due to ‘obvious reasons’. He also said that it was all right for him to involve more on defence.
Fisher said:
“For obvious reasons, I'll be a little more involved than I had planned on, but that's OK. There's time for that."
Fisher joined the Rams after the team failed badly in the last NFL season. After joining the team as the head coach, he introduced new coaching staff, which included his friend Gregg Williams who was serving the New Orleans Saints before joining the Rams.
As look would have it, an NFL investigation unearthed some illegal activities prevailing at Saints, apparently under the nod of Williams.
It was revealed that Williams used to pay monetary rewards to his players if they knocked their opponents out on the field.
The physical nature of the sport was not hidden from anyone, but offering bounties for deliberately hitting the players was a revelation that stunned the league.
Consequently, the league office took stern measures and banned Williams indefinitely for the malpractice. The league also fined Saints’ general manager and other coaching staff.
Since Williams had joined the Rams when the penalty was announced, his new team also suffered.
Recently, Fisher announced his coaching staff and there was no replacement of Williams, which implied that it is going to be a team work with Fisher taking active role in training the team’s defence.
Fisher thinks that he and other members of the staff will be able to handle the pressure. He said:
"The staff has done a great job adjusting, everything's good and installed. As you were able to see, the defence is running around, we were in multiple coverages and fronts up there, so things are going fine."
Meanwhile, Fisher also said that the coaching staff and the players have developed good chemistry, which, he hoped, would translate into the team’s improved performance on the field.
