Jeff Fisher will stay on as Tennessee Titans head coach
After a lot of deliberation throughout the past week, Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams has decided that he is not ready to let head Coach Jeff Fisher go.
"Jeff has meant a great deal to this franchise and we have reached some incredible heights under his leadership," Adams said in a statement Friday.
Adams also praised Titans fans for waiting patiently throughout the week, while he pondered about the future of the team and Fisher.
"Obviously, I have very high expectations for our football team and want to deliver a championship to our fans," the 88-year-old owner said. "Jeff understands this and shares my expectations. The results of his leadership have been some very good football
teams and I believe he will get us back to an elite level."
Just two days earlier, Adams agreed to let go of quarterback Vince Young. He was 30-17 for the team over five seasons, but his return to the team was questioned on 21 November. After suffering a broken finger he threw his jersey and shoulder pads into
the stands, and yelled at Fisher in front of a packed stadium before storming off of the field.
"There wasn't any hesitancy of waiting till the 25th hour," Titans linebacker Will Witherspoon said. "There's plenty of time for things to be done. I think Vince has a very bright future ahead of him. I'm just sorry I didn't get a chance to see him
grow into the quarterback I think he can be."
The decision to keep Fisher will make him the National Football League’s (NFL) longest serving coach with a single team. He has coached the Titans for 17 straight years.
"Clearly I am pleased with the news today. Presenting Mr. Adams with his first Lombardi Trophy is still the objective and I will continue to work for that goal," Fisher said.
His contract calls him to receive $6.5 million for 2011, but changes will be made to the coaching staff for his continuing reign as head coach.
