Jeff Francis yet to retain a place in the Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds non-roster starting pitcher Jeff Francis indicated on Tuesday, March 20, that he will report to Triple-A Louisville instead of opting out of it. He is currently in a Minor League deal which can potentially pencil his place in the Reds
provided he proves his mettle in the presence of Bronson Arroyo, Jhonny Cueto and Mat Latos.
However, much as the Reds have had some of the finest pitchers available at their disposal, Francis has made a strong case with the performance he has been exhibiting lately. He has a 2.77 ERA in the four games that he has played in the Cactus League, with
no walks and eight strikeouts.
The impressive performance is a testimony to the talent this player possesses. With the massively powerful show in the pitching, Francis would – nonetheless, leave it to the discretion of the Reds to decide what role he could play in the Major League Baseball.
"I came here just trying to do what I know how to do," Francis said. "I feel like I've thrown the ball the way I usually throw it and like to throw it. I've commanded pitches and stayed ahead in the count and stayed away from walking guys. All the stuff
that's out of my control, I leave that to the powers that be and just try to do my job."
Along with the likes of Arroyo, Latos and Cueto, the Reds have Aroldis Chapman and Homer Bailey who can add to the strength of the defence. But Francis’ addition will undeniably vitalize the rotation or bullpen further --- wherever he is asked to pitch.
As for the salary that he can make if he makes to the Reds, which is around $1.5 million, the pitcher is not concerned about that at this juncture. "I am not even thinking about it," he said. "I'm just trying to get people out."
Beyond any doubt, it is the Reds which will decide what course of action to take in the future. But Francis’ inclusion in the team will arguably be an added advantage for the National League team.
