Jeff Gordon, other NASCAR drivers call for repaving of Kentucky Speedway – NASCAR news
NASCAR drivers including Jeff Gordon have complained about the bumps created in the tarmac at the Kentucky Speedway.
The venue is going to host its first race of the 2011 Sprint Cup Series and the drivers have faced a tough time during the practice sessions.
Jeff Gordon was one of the many drivers suggesting that the circuit needs to be repaved. He thinks there are some other tracks as well which need a new layer of asphalt.
Jeff Gordon said, “It is very rough here. If you can find a way around the bumps, great. This is a pretty unique line that you run here. You really are wide into Turn 1, which helps you get around some of the bumps. When we get into the race, you're going
to have to run those other lines if you're going to pass.”
Gordon was convinced after practicing on the track for the Cup race that the track needs to be repaved. The four-time Sprint Cup Series champion, Jeff Gordon had a rough ride over the bumpy tarmac.
Although the practice sessions were cancelled due to the rain but the earlier seven hours of test run was enough for the racers to come up with the idea.
He also added that the bumps are almost along the race line, somewhat guiding the racers. He said being in traffic it will be very difficult to stay out of them.
Denny Hamlin commented on the track conditions referring to the last CWTS event at Kentucky as he said, “Anybody that restarted on the bottom was done. You could not do anything at all. Passing was nearly impossible unless you made it really on the high
side. So, it is rough. It's really, honestly, like two different racetracks from one groove to the next.”
He also added that the bumps at turn 1 and 2 make it hard to keep the cars side-by-side after the restart but makes it easier for the drivers on the outside to take the bump free line. However, he thinks that repaving Kentucky is not that important at the
moment.
