Jeff Janov’s Dark Star retains lead in California: 2011 Rolex Farr 40 North American Championship
The second day of the 2011 Rolex Farr 40 North American Championship ended at Long Beach California with Dark Star, owned by Jeff Janov, retaining its lead at the end of five races with 11 points.
Frederic Scheer’s Far Niente finished second overall with 19 points on Sunday, May 29.
The championship is being hosted by the Long Beach Yacht Club in California. Dark Star finished at first place in three races whereas Far Niente won the first race of the day.
Conditions on the course became severe after the yachts left the dock and John Busch, principle race officer, had to ask them to take the alternative course in the breakwater rather than original
Alpha course, to avoid any mishap. The waves on the alternate route were much calmer despite heavy winds.
In the first race of the day and the overall fourth race, Dark Star tacked close to Piranha, owned by David Voss, resulting in on-water judges’ whistle. As a result, Dark Star had to turn back to
finish the race at third place. However, Dark Star took the next race with relative ease to end the day at first place again.
Talking to the reporters after the day’s race, Janov said, "It was the right thing to do. That could have happened to anybody today. I certainly had my hands full all day."
The overall result at the end of the day is as follows.
1) Dark Star, Jeff Janov – 1, 1, 5, 3, 1 = 11
