Jeff Maggert takes a good start at the Greenbrier Classic
Jeff Maggert fired a bogey-free six-under par 64 in the opening round of the Greenbrier Classic, at the Old White TPC, in White Sulphur Springs, to tie for the second place on Thursday, July 5, 2012.
Maggert started off on the back nine of the course and recorded a birdie on the very first hole (No. 10) that he played. Another three birdies through till the 18th hole took him to four-under par for the round.
However, he lost some pace while playing the front nine and managed to score only two birdies to finish one stroke behind the leader, Vijay Singh.
Overall, it was a great display of game by the American and he did not have any trouble in making pars and birdie chances.
He himself looked surprised with his performance, especially after a disappointing week at the Congressional Country Club.
“Obviously a good start. I kind of surprised myself a little bit with my play,” he said. “I played really bad last week up at Congressional and came down here early ... felt like I got things figured out a little bit the last couple days, but certainly wasn't
expecting to play as well as I did today”.
“But the ball striking was fantastic today, just kept the ball in play, gave myself opportunities to make birdies and had a couple little tough little chip shots that I got up and down for pars, and other than that, it was just nice and steady all day long,”
he added.
According to him, the back nine of the course was relatively easier because of two par-five holes compared to none on the front nine.
Right from the start of the 2012 season, Maggert was struggling to return to his form, as he missed the cut 10 times in the 18 starts that he has made so far.
His best finish of the season came in January’s Humana Challenge, when he took the fifth spot on the leaderboard.
Thereafter, he failed to register a single top-10 finish in 16 events. Therefore, he now has a great chance of improving his track record through a consistent display of his game in the remaining rounds.
Martin Flores and Jonathan Byrd were the other two players who joined him with the same score as he had on the leaderboard.
