Jeff Maggert ties for the first position after the first round at the FedEx St. Jude Classic
Jeff Maggert carded a four-under par 66 in the opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic to share the lead on Thursday, June 7, 2012.
It was a low scoring round, as only 27 players succeeded to break the par at the TPC Southwind in Memphis.
Maggert started off on the back nine of the course and recorded four birdies to go four-under par.
An amazing eagle on the par-five third hole allowed him to go further low in the round. However, he failed to register a good finish and suffered two bogeys thereafter.
On the eighth hole, his tee shot plunged into the mud near the green. Therefore, he failed to chip the ball near the hole and missed the putt, which forced him to suffer a bogey in the end.
He is now leading, along with John Merrick, with a one-stroke margin over Arjun Atwal, Jeff Overton, J.J. Henry and Seung-Yul Noh.
“I got off to a really good start,” he said. “I knew the golf course was going to be a little bit easier the first couple hours this morning being first off, so I was able to take advantage of that and just played really solid on my first nine holes and
the last nine I played well, too, had a nice eagle on the third hole, couple of bogies coming in, kind of a bad chip shot on the fifth hole”.
“Then on the eighth hole just an unusual circumstance in front of the green there, being so muddy, you know, and the ball just kind of plugged in the mud,” he added.
Overall, it was a decent round posted by Maggert, especially when the course conditions were not so favourable.
Particularly, the first half of the round went pretty well. However, the wind gusts started to blow in the evening, creating trouble for the players.
After a good start on the first day, he is now confident to continue with his form throughout the tournament, while aiming for the second victory in the event.
His first win of the event came in 2006 St. Jude Classic, when he defeated Tom Pernice, Jr. with a three-stroke margin.
