Jeff Skinner looking forward to future with new six-year deal with Carolina Hurricanes -NHL Update
After two years in Carolina, it seems like Jeff Skinner wants to stay with Hurricanes and make his career with them after the 20-year-old signed a six-year, $34.35 million deal on Wednesday, August 8, 2012, with one season still remaining on his entry-level
contract.
Skinner now has an annual salary cap hit of $5.725 million each year but his salary break up over the next six seasons is a little different. The young forward will be getting $4.35 million after his three-year, entry-level contract comes to an end, for
the first season, and will make a cool $6 million every year after that for the remainder of the deal.
Carolina Hurricanes selected Skinner as the seventh overall back in round-one of the 2010 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft and has definitely proved to be a gem of a player. In 146 career games, Skinner has 107 points (51 goals, 56 assists) despite
a concussion back in December of 2011.
"It's nice to be a part of the organization for even longer," Skinner said. "Obviously, I'm very grateful for them to select me in the draft (No. 7 in 2010) and then today showing me the confidence to have me around long-term. It's definitely a nice message
and hopefully I can prove them right."
Hurricanes are a totally changed team heading into the 2012-2013 regular season as the team acquired high level forward, Jordan Staal, along with signing on Washington Capitals unrestricted free agent, Alexander Semin. Expectations have risen and so will
Carolina’s from Jeff Skinner, who is yet to perform in his first postseason game.
"That's a pretty good point," Skinner said. "Just not putting too much pressure on yourself. I think all athletes want to perform the best they can. Going forward, it's not going to change the way you sort of look at yourself. I mean, I know the investment
and the confidence the Canes are showing in me and I appreciate that and I hope I can come through."
The native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, has proved himself to be one of the best rookies in the league as he also won the Calder Trophy back in 2010 for his outstanding performance.
