Jeff Skinner reportedly signing contract extension with Carolina Hurricanes -NHL Update
After the completion of his three-year, entry-level deal worth $2.7 million, Jeff Skinner is reportedly staying with original draft team, the Carolina Hurricanes, as some sources are terming a contract to be announced any time now while others say the deed
has already been done.
While Skinner has one-year remaining on his contract with Carolina as the 2012-2013 regular season is yet to come into play, it is seen to be a safe-play move by the Hurricanes in order to keep him locked on.
The 20-year-old would have become a restricted free agent otherwise.
Carolina Hurricanes general manager, Jim Rutherford, announced the news via Twitter that they would be locking on the player “for a number of years”, but nothing has been officially confirmed up until now.
TSN’s Bob McKenzie broke the news that he had signed to what is believed to be a six-year contract worth a possible $34.2 million, which would be paying him nearly $6 million each season. The news is definitely exciting for the franchise as Carolina’s Rutherford
said,
"It looks like we are going to be able to get Jeff Skinner tied up for a number of years. Exciting news for our franchise."
Skinner is a former seventh overall pick of the 2010 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by Carolina Hurricane. The young centre has evolved as a top level player for Carolina as he has managed to put up high numbers each year for the past two seasons.
Skinner has 107 points (51 goals, 56 assists) in 146 games with last year being a little slow due to a concussion in December of 2011, limiting him to just 64 games after a full 82 game season.
With the young forward now locked on board and having Jordan Staal and Alexander Semin this year as well, there is no telling how far Carolina Hurricanes might be able to go this upcoming 2012-2013 NHL regular season.
His 63 points in 82 games during his first major league year were enough to give him the Calder Trophy for the best rookie in the league.
An official announcement by Carolina Hurricanes should be expected in the upcoming days.
