Jeff Skinner scores twice as Carolina Hurricanes rally past Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2-NHL Match Update
Jeff Skinner made sure that he would show Tampa Bay what a young rookie team could do and especially when facing their arch-rivals in the National Hockey League (NHL) it was surprising the ice did not melt as the Hurricanes thrashed the Lightning, 4-2, at
the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States, on Tuesday, November 1, 2011.
Coming out of a disappointing loss against Philadelphia Flyers earlier on Saturday, 5-1, Carolina is determined to turn their team around on the path to the Stanley Cup with the new month of November.
Skinner did not care about how many veterans stood in front of him, especially about 42-year-old goalie, Dwayne Roloson, all he wanted to do was score goals unconditionally.
"That was the book on Skinner when he came in (to the NHL), that he scores goals in heavy traffic", coach, Paul Maurice, said. "And you don't really appreciate what that means until you see it on a regular basis. He has such incredible balance and strength
to be able to handle those big guys and still be able to handle the puck and change directions. It's certainly something to watch".
Teddy Purcell added his fourth of the season to open the scoring with less than five minutes remaining to play in the first period. Chad LaRose followed closely behind by scoring his second of the season during a power play at the 18:21 mark and levelled
the score, 1-1.
Jeff Skinner added two straight, his first 22 seconds into the second period while his sixth of the season came little over midway through at the 10:38 mark.
"You want to try to isolate the man with no stick", Skinner said. "(Jokinen) made a great pass to me, and then he did a great job opening up and I just put it in the net there".
Brett Connolly put Tampa Bay within reach of the score with less than six minutes remaining in the third and final period of regulation but it was LaRose who scored the match insurer nearly a minute later.
Carolina Hurricanes play the next game against Washington Capitals on Friday, while Tampa Bay Lightning hosts the Chicago Blackhawks the same day.
