Jeff Wilpon hopeful of contract extension of R.A. Dickey - MLB Update
New York Mets’ chief operating officer, Jeff Wilpon expresses hope that they will be successful in retaining R.A. Dickey in the club.
Despite the fact trade possibility exists, he is of the view that they will try their best to clinch an agreement with Dickey.
Earlier Mets’ General Manager Sandy Alderson claimed that sending Dickey to another organisation as part of a trade deal is not improbable.
While he mentioned his desire to keep Dickey in the club-house, he could not help discussing his overall limitations in this regard.
Dickey was a de facto ace of New York during 2012 regular season. He piled up wins, which are considered to be one of the most dominating parameters while determining effectiveness of a pitcher.
Apart from this, Dickey topped in a number of categories with regard to pitching stats from National League.
As an acknowledgment of his stand out shows during last season, he is among the finalists for winning Cy Young Award this year. According to most of the experts, he is ideally poised to clinch this honour, because his competitors lag behind him in various
categories.
While talking about the contract of Dickey, Wilpon has placed trust in the competency of his officials, believing that whatever decision they make, will be right.
“I think we can multi-task with the amount of brains we have in the front office,” Wilpon said. “I think we’re good.”
Wilpon has explained that top officials will sit together and deliberate. He is fairly confident that they will offer Dickey such a deal which is in accord with his wishes.
“[It’s] to go through the process with Sandy [Alderson, general manager] and the baseball department and try to get both of them signed,” Wilpon stated. “That’s what we’re doing. That doesn’t mean Sandy’s not exploring other things, which is just a backup
at this point. He should be doing that. ... We’re moving forward as much as we can.”
Wilpon’s optimism will be encouraging for Dickey, who desperately wants to stay with the club.
If Dickey is traded, it will be disheartening for him, because he has special memories with the Mets.
Fans will be hoping that Dickey remains as part of an expedition of their team beyond 2013 regular season.
