Jeffrey Siegal’s USA 1296 wins 2012 U.S. Etchells Class National Championship
After a superb performance from the start of the 2012 U.S. Etchells Class National Championship, New York Yacht Club’s Jeffrey Siegal and his crew comprising of Jeff Madrigali, William Van Waay and Sarah Callahan grabbed the top podium spot of the regatta.
Siegal’s team on the boat, USA 1296 cruised into the championship victory after compiling 44 points.
The fleet, comprising of 37 boats, enjoyed some superb weather conditions which made the racing more excited and thrilling. The winds at Miami were quite ideal for the sailors to have a perfect sail and complete the scheduled racing on the final day. The
regatta that featured 37 teams was hosted by Coral Reef Yacht Club and Mount g*y Rum.
The participants reached the race course on time from New Zealand and to start the proceedings of eight races. The first day of the championship witnesses some challenging light to medium wind conditions that changed gradually during the event and became
stronger until the end.
The USA 1296 team under the leadership of Jeff Siegal grabbed an early lead over the local sailor Jeff Dever on his USA 1090. However, the regatta leaders maintained their dominance while Dever’s team slipped down to fourth podium at the end of the final
day.
Concluding day of the sailing began under tricky breeze that shifted westerly at Biscayne Bay. Siegal’s team launched their boat with the confidence that they will win the championship quite easily. They finished the first race on fifth podium place and
the second race on 24th number to earn 44 points and win the championship.

2. No Dramas James McHugh Andy Beadsworth, Pete McCormick SNG (24) 5 2 8 21 2 6 7 = 51 points
3. Cruel Jane Dirk Kneulman Anatole Masfen, Phillip Carlson Royal Akarana Yacht Club 7 9 11 (33) 3 1 2 19 = 52 points
4. Leading Edge Jeff Dever Steve Girling, Ched Proctor CRYC 9 20 4 3 6 4 (25 ZFP) 10 = 56 points
5. USA 1375 Argyle Campbell Jamie Hardenbergh, Dwight Belden SDYC 3 11 10 11 (12) 12 11 1 = 59 points
6. USA 102 Henry Frazer, Tomas Hornos Zachary Via   1 6 18 22 1 5 10/ZFP (29 ZFP) = 63 points
