Jelena Dokic ends Kurumi Nara’s run at the 2011 BMW Australian Open
Australian tennis player Jelena Dokic defeated Japanese tennis pro Kurumi Nara in three difficult sets at the second round of the 2011 BMW Australian Open, winning the match 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-2. Dokic, who currently resides in Monaco, took over two hours and
fifteen minutes to defeat her unseeded opponent.
Jelena Dokic has been part of the Women’s Tennis Association [WTA] circuit since 1998, having turned pro over twelve years ago. Meanwhile, Kurumi Nara is only 19 years old and has not turned professional yet. The young player managed to oust her Australian
opponent in the first set, defeating the player 6-3.
Although Nara did not score any aces in the process, she managed to break Dokic once to win 57 percent of the total points in the set. However, Dokic scored three aces and did not commit any double faults in this set. She attempted to break Nara, but the
Japanese player successfully fought off the solitary break point.
Dokic put up a tougher fight in the second set, determined to punish Nara for her defeat in the first set. She scored three aces yet again, although these were somewhat negated by five double faults. Nara did not commit any double faults, but was broken
three times out of seven.
To counter this, the Japanese player broke Dokic three times out of four, setting up a more impressive percentage. However, Dokic emerged successful in a tie-breaker which helped her to win six more points than her opponent. The Australian player, who is
27 years old, won the set 7-6(8).
Kurumi Nara surprised fans yet again in the third set, although it was considerably less pleasant than her first-set win. The Japanese player was expected to recover her stamina, as she had the advantage of age; however, she fell quickly to Dokic in the
third set.
The Australian player seemed to be energized by her victory in the previous set, and scored two aces to seal the win. She also committed two double faults, but Nara countered those with two of her own. In addition to this, Dokic was only broken twice while
Nara could not fight off half of eight break points in the last set.
She lost the match in just eight games, with four service and return games per player. At the end of the tie-breaking set, Dokic had won an impressive 59 percent of the total points. Overall, Jelena Dokic won 105 of 201 points in the entire match. She scored
a total of eight aces, and saved one of seven break points.
Now, the Australian pro will face eighth seed Serbian Bojana Jovanovski in the quarterfinals of the Malaysian event.
