Jelena Dokic fails against Olivia Rogowska in round two – Malaysian Open 2012
Defending champion from Australia, Jelena Dokic, faced an upset at the hands of her compatriot, Olivia Rogowska, who won a gruelling two-hour battle in three-sets 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2). The contest was played at the hard courts of Kuala
Lumpur during the BMW Malaysian Open.
Both the players were playing against each other for the first time at the courts and stunningly the 127th ranked Aussie ousted the 28-years-old compatriot in a world class thriller. She played extremely well to make
a name and progress to the last eight players of the tournament.
The match started with an all-round onslaught from the defending champion who wasted little time in ousting her opponent with a lead of 3-0, including a breakthrough. She further enhanced her score line and kept the lead intact
till the end of the set. The double-faults were just one apiece for both players which shows that there were no easy points played throughout the set.
However, the tally of double-faults increased in the second set that infected Dokic more than her compatriot. She committed four double-faults on the most critical stages of the match; gifting away a couple of breakpoints that
diminished her chances of staying in the set. Although, she won one break back but couldn’t find a way to break serve for the second time and tie the scores.
A blistering battle in the final set was witnessed. Both players kicked-off with serve holds before swapping breakpoints to push the scores at 3-3. No more breakpoints were played; Dokic was pressurized in the eighth game and almost
lost the breakpoint before fighting back into the contest and keeping the scores together.
A tie-breaker round was required to decided this enthralling encounter. Dokic was experienced and also defending her title so she was expected to deny the 20-years-old Rogowska from winning the contest but she failed to hold her
serve and lost an early mini-break.
Rogowska took advantage of the situation and steamed past Dokic with another couple of points that booked a quarter-final spot for her. She will take on the likes of fourth seed wildcard compatriot, Eleni Deniilidou in the quarters.
