Jelena Dokic ousts Bojana Jovanovski at the 2011 BMW Malaysian Open
Australian tennis pro Jelena Dokic defeated Serbian tennis pro and eighth seed Bojana Jovanovski in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-2 in the first quarterfinal of the 2011 BMW Malaysian Open. Dokic, who is unseeded at the Kuala Lumpur event, defeated Jovanovski
in just under one hour and thirty-nine minutes.
Dokic recorded her biggest win in five years in the first round of this tournament, defeating first seed and 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone to proceed to the second round. With the highest-ranked player knocked out of the tournament, Dokic’s
confidence rose and she performed admirably in her latest match against Jovanovski.
Although Jovanovski is currently World Number 55, she could only keep up her performance in the first set. However, the 19-year-old Serbian pro gave Dokic a considerable run for her money by breaking her twice and scoring just five points less than her opponent.
The set went into a tie-breaker, before Dokic took the lead with a neatly executed backhand.
The second set was a much more straightforward affair, with Dokic sealing the match in just eight service and return games apiece. The Australian World Number 91 seemed encouraged by her first round victory, and exploited Jovanovski’s exhaustion to score
two aces and convert two break points successfully. She managed to win the set with an impressive 61 percent of the total points.
The Australian pro entered the tournament confidently, so her qualification for the semi-finals is no surprise especially after her defeat of Schiavone. Talking to the media after the match, she said, “I have come to Malaysia for this tournament in good
physical and mental shape. I am feeling better and fitter and, because of this, I am able to play well. I am very pleased with my serve and I hope to continue playing with consistency.”
Jelena Dokic will now face either Anne Kremer of Luxembourg, or Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands in the next round of the 2011 BMW Malaysian Open depending on the outcome of their quarterfinal match. The match is currently underway, with the current
scoreline as 6-2, 5-3 for Krajicek.
