Jelena Dokic steps away from the Indian Wells due to a wrist injury – Tennis News
Former world number nine, Jelena Dokic, retired from the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday due to a wrist injury. She was scheduled to take on the Argentine tennis ace, Gisela Dulko, in the opening round of the tournament but she could
only survive one game in the match before hurting her wrist and leaving the arena in pain. The match could hardly last nine minutes.
The match was to be played on the hard courts of Indian Wells, California and Dulko will now take on the former world number one, Maria Sharapova. Dokic hasn’t been enjoying a good run of form this season and her record of 3-7
clearly portrays her distress at the courts.
She started the season in Auckland but failed to kick-off the year with a win. She lost to the German tennis ace, Mona Barthel, in the opening round. Apia Sydney International was the second tournament she played; could only register
a win against the Aussie wildcard entrant Isabella Holland before bowing down to the French big gun, Marion Bartoli.
The Australian Open campaign for the 28-years-old Aussie was not good at all as she was drawn with Bartoli in the second round after defeating the Russian beauty queen, Anna Chakvetadze in round one. First round exit in XX Copa
BBVA Colsanitas and Whirlpool Monterrey Open further doubled her misery.
She entered the BMW Malaysian Open with high hopes of defending her title but stooped to the Romanian booming starlet, Alexandra Cadantu, in an epic three-setter. She travelled to Indian Wells and now sits at the sidelines after
incurring an injury that will definitely sink her confidence further.
It seems like she is losing her sublime touch and has already drowned to 118th ranked this year after such a miserable start. She was the hot favourite to make it to the Top-64 players before June 21 to attain a direct
entry into the London Olympics later this year but that case seems very unlikely considering the fact that her injury seemed very severe.
This is definitely tough times for the Aussie starlet who has seen a very dismal period with her family issues as well. She had disputes with her father and left the tennis circuit in 2006-2007. She came back to the arena and enjoyed
a good run of form but now she is once again a victim of poor winning record. Everyone hopes that she picks up her form and recovers from the injury with Godspeed.
