Jelena Dokic trounces Anna Chakvetadze in the opening round – Australian Open 2012
Aussie tennis ace, Jelena Dokic, received a great round of applause after her first round triumph over the Russian, Anna Chakvetadze, on the second day of Australian Open. Second head-to-head encounter between the two tennis queens
ended up in straight sets win for the home favourite competitor, with the final scores of 6-2, 6-1. Everyone in the Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne, cheered every point won by their queen.
Almost three years ago, both these players locked horns for the first time in the second round of the Australian Open and Dokic faced a bit of resistance from the Russian but managed to seal an epic three-set triumph. Chakvetadze
climbed as high as world number five in September 2007 and her rival had been world number nine in March 2003; so former Top-10 contenders were expected to put up a good fighting show but the Aussie tennis ace was in no mood to allow any sort of advantage
to the visitor.
The local tennis queen started off the proceedings with a successful serve game; followed by a couple of cracking winners down the line to bag the first breakthrough; another successful serve game gave 3-0 lead to Dokic in the
first set. Both players held their respective serves in the next four games of the set as the scores were pushed to 5-2 in favour of the Aussie.
In the eighth game, Dokic changed her game play, rushing towards the net after every return shot and playing an excellently paced drop shot; she did that on three successive occasions and successfully broke serve to pocket the
first set. Crowd loved every bit of it as the Aussie punched the air to demonstrate her happiness.
A complete replica of the first five games in the second set pushed the scores to 4-1 in favour of Dokic; crucial breakthrough in the second game for the Aussie tennis ace mounted immense pressure on the Russian. She played couple
of eye-startling winners in the sixth game to further strengthen her position. It was just a matter of time before Dokic rounded off the second set win and confirmed her place in the next round.
