Jelena Jankovic: “I’ve been able to be in the top 10 for five consecutive years” – Tennis News
World number 22, Jelena Jankovic, is going through a tough time of her career having seeing the peak in 2008. It is very frustrating for an athlete to witness her dreams being shattered away in front of her eyes in every single
game. She failed to win any of the two singles Round Rubber clashes in the Federation Cup final that forced her country to lose the competition. She was thrashed by the likes of Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova with some commanding scores. It is disturbing
for her and her anger is multiplied when she takes a look at her Grand Slam trophy rack which is completely empty except the one mixed doubles title.
The 27-year-old Serb told the sport 360 interviewer, “It’s very difficult to be at the top of the game and I’ve been able to be in the top 10 for five consecutive years. It’s a lot of hard work and dedication, and also during those
five years I was very fortunate that I didn’t have any big injuries. So I was able to compete at a very high level and train hard to sustain that level in order to be up there.”
Jankovic was the number one player in the junior and won the Australian Open title in that category at the age of 15. However, she hasn’t grabbed any Grand Slam titles ever since she has turned pro. She was extremely close in realising
her goal at the US Open in 2008 but lost in the final of the contest. However, there are no hard feelings for the Serb and she is still motivated to accomplish the goal. She believes that her drop in the ranking is due to the intensity of high competitiveness
in the arena. The aging factor has depleted her game and stamina that has definitely assisted in lowering her rank. She is out of the Top-20 category at the moment.
However, the new season is just around the corner and resolution for the Serb is to break back in the elite Top-10 category again. Let’s hope the 27-year-old powerhouse manages to combine her act and gather few dashing victories.
