Jelena Jankovic advances in Indian Wells with a breadstick
6th seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic trashed American wild card Coco Vandeweghe in straight sets. She earned a bagel in the second set to cruise into the third round at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open on Friday.
The 26-years-old Serb displayed magnificent skills in the start of the opening set. She triumphed over the 19-years-old Vandeweghe by converting two opportunities to her advantage in the opening set and with a score of 6-2. She
hammered three aces and had a much better first serve percentage of 65 percent as compared to youngster’s 50 percent. She also registered an impressive 76 percent win on it.
The in-form Serb committed two double faults and produced a lower first serve percentage. But her stats had no effect on her performance as she earned an amazing 88 percent win on her first serve and broke Vandeweghe’s serve three
times to clinch with a breadstick. Jankovic thus sealed the set 6-1 and advance for a chance to become the first women to win at Indian Wells twice in a row since 1991. She defeated the current world number 1 Caroline Wozniacki in last year finals
Overall the American saved four break points and had an acceptable first serve percentage. But she couldn’t penetrate into Serb’s defences and produced no break points at all.
"There wasn't a lot of rhythm out there," Jankovic said. "She made a lot of mistakes ... and the points were very short."
"So all I had to do was get the ball in play and kind of wait for my chances. I did what I had to do, and I'm happy to get to the next round," the Serb said after winning the match. Her biggest problem this day was the hot weather
condition as she is used to play at night.
The Serb, who recently reached the finals at Monterrey before losing to 2ndseeded Russian wild card Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, will next face 32nd seeded German Julia Goerges. Goerges also reached this spot
by dumping Austrian Sybille Bammer out of this tournament.
Ranked 35th in the world, Goerges earned an awesome 80 percent win on her lower first serve percentage in the match. She broke the world number 105 Bammer’s serve four times to clinch the match 6-1, 6-3. Besides this
she fired two aces and committed less double faults than her opponent.
