Jelena Jankovic all set to take off the grass court season – Tennis News
Once reining the women’s tennis world, Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic has been struggling to reclaim her top spot for a number of years now. Her run this circuit has not been that impactful so far but the veteran is still hopeful for
a cracking grass-court season.
Currently holding the 22nd spot in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Jankovic is 18-15 in the running season and is still to win a championship title. Her voyages are frequently hampered by agonizing
injuries but the 27-year-old Serb has been determined as ever to break his way in the Top-10.
Jankovic is preparing for the upcoming Grand Slam tournament, the Wimbledon Championships and the all-prestigious Olympic Games next month. She is hoping to have some cracking victories prior to her grand campaigns and looks ahead
to grab the AEGON Classic title to be played in Edgbaston this week. She stood champion here five years ago and believes it is time to revive that glory this time round in order to gain some confidence and form.
“If I could be the No 1 player in the world, then that shows something. It shows that I can do it again,” said Jankovic. “It’s just a matter of believing and working hard, and keeping your mind right. I am changing a little bit
the way I am playing, and I am working on some things in my game. I want to go to another level and be a better player.”
Jankovic is seeded at number five in the AEGON Classic draw, with the Italian tennis ace, Francesca Schiavone, leading the competitive field. German beauty, Sabine Lisicki is the third seed while the Slovak veteran, Daniela Hantuchova,
is place at number four seed. Jankovic was awarded a wildcard entry to the tournament and she desires to cash in this opportunity at all cost.
The top eight seeded players are awarded byes to have a direct access to the second round of the tournament and Jankovic will need just two victories to reach the quarter-final round. She might face the top seed, Schiavone, in
the round of eight if the Italian also wins her two initial round matches. Schiavone has never won a championship title on grass courts and it might be the golden opportunity for the Serbian to rally past her to reclaim her lost glory.
The defending champion, Sabine Lisicki, might be the huge threat for Jankovic but the former world number one is certainly capable of taking her down on any platform.
