Jelena Jankovic and Agnieszka Radwanska ease into the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open
Serbian tennis star Jelena Jankovic made a great start at the 2011 Mutua Madrid Open as she made quick work of Spanish Laura Pous-tio 6-2, 6-0 on Sunday to reach the second round of the tournament.
Since her return to the Women’s Tennis Association arena earlier this year, former world number one Jankovic has struggled to find her peak form. Although she reached the semi-finals at Dubai Duty Free, Qatar Ladies Open and Charlestion,
she is yet to claim her first WTA title of the season. In the absence of injured Kim Clijsters and William sisters, Jankovic will have a great opportunity to earn valuable WTA ranking points by reaching the final stages of the WTA event.
In her first round match here, Jankovic did not allow her opponent much leeway and required only 56 minutes to emerge victorious in a completely one-sided contest. She smashed her forehand and backhand winners all over the court
and broke the serve twice the pocket the opener 6-2.
Jankovic continued her impressive form in the second set as well and did not drop a game in the set to seal the match in straight sets. Laura Pous-Tio who has given considerable performances on the tour since the start of this
season, looked completely out of sort and paid the heavy price for a large number of unforced errors.
"I think I was hitting the ball much better and moved much better as well, so I hope to continue. It was a lot better than my first round," said Jankovic, who had only six unforced errors against Pous-Tio. "But I feel also a little
bit slow, especially on the returns. So I was trying to focus and just really try to watch the ball carefully because my reactions, especially on the return, were not really that great.”
In another match number ten seed Agnieszka Radwasnka of Poland came back from behind to register her second round place at the prestigious WTA tournament.
Radwanska broke the serve at regular intervals in the match and used her powerful and effective serve to down her opponent. Her next round match-up will be against Australian Jarmila Gajdosova who defeated Russian Maria Kirilenko
7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
