Jelena Jankovic betters Kaia Kanepi to clear the quarter-final round – e-Boks Open 2012
Former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, took down this year’s Brisbane International winner, Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, in the quarter-final round of the e-Boks Open on Friday. The third seed Serbian battled for almost two hours
to settle the three-setter at 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Being a part of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour swing, the contest was played on the indoor hard courts of Copenhagen, Denmark. Jankovic displayed her vintage form once again to turn the tables on the world
number 34 in style. She was trailing one-set down in the match but recovered with tremendous mastery to reel off the last two sets and register her 15th victory of the running season. The third seed Serbian not only booked a place in the semi-final
of the e-Boks Open but levelled the head-to-head series against Kanepi at 3-3.
Currently holding the 20th spot in the WTA Premier Rankings, Jankovic served with 67 per cent precision in the match and clinched 34 out of 56 first serve points en route to victory. She crafted 12 break opportunities
in the match and converted seven of them to take the better of her opponent. Kanepi, on the other hand, also nailed four out of eight break points but her error-ridden game in the last two sets proved so taxing that she had to finish on the losing side in
the end.
"It was a tough match. I am a bit tired, but I feel good in general," Jankovic said after registering her quarter-final victory against the fifth seed. "She played really well, and I made too many mistakes at some bad times. I'm
glad I chose to play here for the first time. It is a part of the world where I have never been, so I thought why not?"
Jankovic will be a part of Team Serbia in the Fed Cup semi-final tie against Russia next week and said: "I'm not concerned about going from here to Fed Cup on clay," Jankovic said. "I think it is easier to go from hardcourts to
clay than the other way around."
Second seed German, Angelique Kerber, will play against Jankovic in the semi-final round of the e-Boks Open on Saturday.
