Jelena Jankovic cruises past Garbine Muguruza to enter third round – Roland Garros 2013
Former world number one Jelena Jankovic slew the Spanish challenger Garbine Muguruza with a bagel at the French Open 2013 on Thursday.
She notched up a 6-3, 6-0 victory against the Spaniard to progress into the round of 32 at this Grand Slam event taking place in Paris, France.
The Serbian veteran wiped out last 12 games in a row to steal the show at this major clay court tournament. As a result, she booked a spot in the third round and inched a step closer towards the title.
Seeded 18th in this event, Jankovic made a sloppy start at the Stade Roland Garros. She suffered the first blow in the second game and fell at 0-3.
However, the Serb went berserk after that and stroke out six consecutive games. As a result, she sealed the opener by winning six games to three. Jankovic warded off only one out of two breakpoints she came across but converted three out of seven break chances
to her advantage.
Currently ranked 18th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Jankovic maintained her intensity in the following set. She quickly bagged all six games and clinched the set with a bagel. The Serb was never challenged with any breakpoint and capitalised on three out
of five break opportunities to prevail.
On the whole, the 28-year-old manifested a better first serve share of 60 per cent in contrast with her rival’s 54 per cent and amazing availed 24 out of 40 points on it. In addition to this, Jankovic coughed only 12 unforced errors as opposed to Muguruza’s
29 and ended the battle with 58 points.
Up next for Jankovic is the winner of the match between ninth seeded Samantha Stosur and the local challenger, Kristina Mladenovic. If the Serb plays in a similar way, she can reach far in this tournament.
The Chinese challenger, Jie Zheng, will accompany Jankovic in the third round. Zheng crippled the American contestant, Melanie Oudin, with a breadstick to advance. The Chinese recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Oudin in one hour and 19 minutes.
Zheng will next take on the conqueror of match between second seeded Maria Sharapova and the Canadian challenger, Eugenie Bouchard.
