Jelena Jankovic flies high at the Slovenia Open 2010
Jelena Jankovic is a Serbian professional tennis player who was formerly ranked as the number one in the world. Due to a plethora of reasons, she is currently ranked as the world number two. Jankovic has a number of achievements to back her claim for the Slovenia Open 2010. She is the same player who managed to make her way to the final of the U.S. Open along with winning semi-final berths in the Australian and French Open's respectively. Jankovic’s victory at Wimbledon’s mixed doubles final in 2007 made her the first Serbian tennis player to have won at a grand slam championship. This tennis princess is currently one of the most dominant female players at the professional level as a result of her exceptional performances.
This tennis star has started her hard-court season this year by participating at the Banka Koper Slovenia Open, which is being held in Portoroz and is seeded as the number one player at the tournament. This event is part of the Women’s Tennis Association International Tournaments and was first organized in 2005.
The Slovenia Open is the first tournament where Jankovic has participated in after her success at Wimbledon 2010 as the world will get a chance to see a brilliant performance by her in the first round of the competition. Her opponent was the teenage Serbian player, Bojana Jovanovski, whom she defeated in straight sets with a score of 6-3 and 6-3. Even though the new blood, Bojana, worked quite hard to stay focused in the battle to win, she was unable to withstand the power of the more experienced Jankovic and finally gave in to the top seeded player. At many occasions during the match, the teenager managed to put Jankovic’s serve under stress but she failed to keep her own serve consistent as it was broken by her opponent on six occasions.
Although, Bojana Jovanovski is ranked as the world number 93, she gave the world number 2 a fair fight until she finally accepted her defeat. Jankovic had faced an arm injury in 2009 and has claimed to have been feeling much better now. Her arm is fully functional which is quite evident from her astonishing performances this year. Jankovic praised Jovanovski by saying that the teenager is young and talented and that she played really well.
The great Serbian player has made her way to the second round of the tournament where she is scheduled to face the Belarusian player Anastasiya Yakimova. The highlight of Yakimova’s career is that she made it to the third round of the Australian Open in 2007 by upsetting the Japanese player Ai Sugiyama, who was a seeded player, while Yakimova was un-seeded.
The top seed will need to work harder in order to advance further in this tournament because the new players, like Jovanovski and Yakimova, emerging in the scene of tennis, are very skilful. They are brainwashed into believing that winning is everything which gives them motivation to work harder. With her arm injury out of the way, Jankovic has a brighter future and she can secure her place at the top only if she keeps improving her game.
As she is one of the top players at the event, the audiences can be seen full of her fans who have succeeded in expressing their immense love and support for Jankovic. The tennis diva has thanked her fans and it has been reported that she has said that it is her fans that keep her energy high during matches and pump her to carry on when they cheer for her.
The first hurdle is over for the top Serbian player. However, she still has a long way to go in order to prove that she is the best of the best at the Slovenia Open.
