Jelena Jankovic helps Caroline Wozniacki to reach round two - Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2012
In a clash of former world number one players, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark was given the second round slot after Jelena Jankovic of Serbia pulled out of the contest in the second set due to a low back injury. The contest was
played at the red clay courts of Stuttgart, Germany during the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The scores at the time of Serb’s retirement were 6-3, 1-0 in favour of the Dane.
Jankovic was dominating the proceedings at the start having forced her opponent down to a trail of 3-1 courtesy to an early breakpoint. However, the Dane fought back into the contest, winning the following two games and tying the
scores at 3-3.
It was a gruelling contest with length rallies being played to earn each and every single point. Both players were putting their bodies on the line and willing to provide the best entertainment to the visitors in the arena. Probably,
this was the reason that forced a lot of pressure on the 17th ranked Serb’s back and ruled her out of the competition in the later part of the clash.
Wozniacki held her serve in the seventh game and coupled it with thrilling back-to-back winners down the line to bag the second breakpoint on the trot. It was a stunning turnaround in the proceedings that rocked the Serb completely.
The sixth seed Dane continued to stamp her authority and after a slight hustle, she bagged the final serve game. It is a major comeback for the Dane that will help shut her critics who have been hitting on her for her dismal game
play in the big matchups.
At the start of the second set, Jankovic was forced down to a trail of 0-1 courtesy to a breakpoint for her counterpart in the first game. The Dane bagged the following three points; however, in the final point of the match, Jankovic
stretched too far to reach out for a return and placed a lot of stress on her lower back that resulted in an injury.
After consulting her physio, she decided to call it a day and give herself enough time to recover before the start of the hectic tennis schedule in the next month. Last year’s finalist, the sixth seed Dane will be up against the
German tennis ace, Angelique Kerber. It will be an enthralling re-match for the final of the Copenhagen where Kerber stunned the defending champion, Wozniacki, to take the title at the Dane’s home soil.
