Jelena Jankovic meets Agnieszka Radwanska in weekend’s featured match – US Open 2012
A number of cracking encounters will be witnessed on Saturday’s eve at the Flushing Meadows Park in New York, with world class contenders battling out for berths in the fourth round of the US Open Championships. The former world number one, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, will take on the reigning world number two, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the biggest crunch match of the third round.
30th seeded Serbian veteran has been having a dismal run of form this season but has eventually got some hint of her vintage class in a couple of recent tournament. Jankovic came to Flushing Meadows and registered two thumping straight sets victories in the initial rounds to mega event to reach the third round. Unseeded Ukrainian, Kateryna Bondarenko, was the first victim of Jankovic, falling to her might in straight sets, 1-6, 2-6, in the opening round.
27-year-old Jankovic then went on to dump the Spanish qualifier, Lara Arruabarrena Vecino, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round clash to book a date with the second seeded Pole.
Radwanska has been in devastating form this year and has a 50-14 winning record so far. She has already bagged three WTA championship titles in the running season and has successfully held the world number two spot. The 23-year-old Pole contender took off her US Open campaign with a double-breadstick victory against Nina Bratchikova of Russia in the first round. She had a real rough ride against the Spanish underdog, Carla Suarez Navarro, in her next encounter but eventually prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, to make it through to the third round.
Jankovic has already suffered a cracking defeat at the hands of Radwanska earlier this year, when she stooped out to the Pole youngster at 2-6, 6-2, 0-6, at Dubai Duty Free Championship. She is currently 1-2 in the head-to-head series against Radwanska but has looked extremely solid in her most recent matches at the US Open. Jankovic made to the finals of this coveted Grand Slam event in 2008 and hopes to repeat the similar feat this time round as well.
Being the second seeded contestant, Radwanska might be considered as the hot favourite for winning the Saturday’s matchup but Jankovic’s abilities are not to be underestimated. She saw Radwanska tumble in her second round match against Navarro and might try to exert early pressure on her in their upcoming encounter. The Serbian might come as the winner but if Radwanska reigned supreme, it is surely to be a three-setter.
