Jelena Jankovic ousts Jessica Pegula to enter quarters – Family Circle Cup 2013
Former world number one, Jelena Jankovic from Serbia, blasted past the local qualifier, Jessica Pegula, with a bagel at the Family Circle Cup 2013 on Thursday. She jolted down 6-0, 6-4 victory against the American to power into the quarter-finals at this
WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event taking place in Charleston, United States of America.
The 28-year-old re-ignited her old spark at this clay court tournament. She swiped the opening six games and eventually took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against Pegula.
The Serbian veteran was quoted in an on-court interview after bagging the match:
“It was very difficult for all of us to wait around and just keep standing by. You didn't know when you were going to go on the court and you just had to be ready all the time and wait. But when I came out on court I played quite well. The court was slow
because it was quite humid out there and there was a lot of rain. The balls were quite heavy and the overall play was quite heavy. But I got used to it, adjusted to it quite well, and I think I did a great job during the match today."
Seeded ninth at this event, Jankovic stormed into this match. She blasted massive groundstrokes and reeled off six games. The Serb eventually pulled out the opener with a bagel.
Jankovic swayed from her path towards the proceeding set but quickly sought her rhythm. The Serb suffered the initial blow in the opening game and trailed at 0-1. She recovered in the very next game but lost her serve again, eventually falling at 1-3. Jankovic
remained calm after that and recovered in the sixth game. She got the breakthrough in the last game and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
The Serb is in great run of form this season. She has won 12 out of 13 matches this season and her only loss came at the semi-finals in Sony Open Tennis where she bowed out to Maria Sharapova.
Next in line for Jankovic is the Canadian qualifier, Eugenie Bouchard, who recorded a 6-1, 2-0 retirement victory against third seeded Samantha Stosur.
