Jelena Jankovic ousts Tamira Paszek in straight sets at the 2011 Family Circle Cup
Serbian tennis player Jelena Jankovic dismissed Austrian pro Tamira Paszek in straight sets in her opening round at the 2011 Family Circle Cup, setting up a 6-2, 6-3 scoreline against her opponent. The player took a little over an hour and thirty-six minutes to send Paszek home in the second round of the event.
Jelena Jankovic is a former World Number 1, and is currently ranked World Number 8 by the Women’s Tennis Association. The player is 26 years old, and currently resides in Dubai, UAE. She has been part of the WTA Tour for almost eleven years, having joined the professional circuit in 2000. The Serbian pro has won a total of twelve WTA career titles so far.
Tamira Paszek, on the other side of the court, is ranked almost 90 spots lower than Jankovic at World Number 93. She is 20 years old, and has spent almost six years on the WTA Tour. The Austrian pro began competing as a professional tennis player in 2005. She is right-handed, and has won two WTA career titles over the course of her career.
The match was an easy one for Jelena Jankovic, even though she faced some trouble against Paszek. The Serbian pro scored two aces, an achievement which was somewhat negated by her four double faults. In addition to this, she was also broken twice by her Austrian opponent. For her own part, Tamira Paszek did not commit any double faults but she also failed to score any aces. She managed to save three of nine break points, but could not keep her performance consistent and lost the match 6-2, 6-3. Jankovic managed to secure a satisfactory 57 per cent of the total points in the match.
This is Jankovic’s third victory over her Austrian opponent, bringing their head to head record to 3-0. The two players first met on the clay courts of Rome in 2007, when Jankovic was ranked World Number 5. Paszek was Number 78 at this time, and lost the match in straight sets. Their next encounter took place at the 2008 Australian Open, at which Jelena Jankovic was ranked World Number 4. Paszek was World Number 39 at the time, and tried to put up a greater fight against her opponent this time round. however, Jankovic’s experience prevailed and Tamira Paszek lost the match 2-6, 6-2, 12-10.
Jelena Jankovic will proceed to the third round of the prestigious Family Circle Cup, where she will meet South African tennis player Chanelle Scheepers. The third seed received a bye in the first round of the tournament, so this will be her second match at Charleston this year.
