Jelena Jankovic overwhelms Kateryna Bondarenko in the first round – US Open 2012
27-year-old Serbian tennis professional, Jelena Jankovic eased past the Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko at the US Open 2012. The encounter between the two took place on Tuesday and Jankovic summed up her victory in straight
sets, 6-1, 6-2, to reach the second round of the Grand Slam event.
In an interview, the Serbian told the media, “When you have achieved your dream in life. When you’re like playing some other tournaments, or you’ve just been so long on the tour, you can get down. But right now I’m feeling
good and I want to compete. I really enjoy being on the court and battling, and I love my job — for right now. I think in every profession at times, you’re going to get tired no matter what you do, and you’ve just got to find a way to enjoy it again and have
fun. At the end of the day, our sport is just a game.”
30th seeded Jankovic aims to return to the top rankings and firmly implants her feet to secure Grand Slam glory on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows. The initial match proved to be easy encounter
for her and she battled forward in the set striking uncountable angled shots against her rival. The Serbian quickly pulled out the opening set with 6-1 lead. She played flawlessly and did not face any break point on her serve.
The 26-year-old Ukrainian tried her utmost to upset her rival but after several tireless attempts, she only managed to bag two games in the next set. She was unable to break her Serbian opponent’s serve even once and was
clueless about her next move. The former world number one unleashed herself and captured the last three games in the set, marking a 6-2 win.
The right-handed Serbian tennis ace successfully enhanced her head-to-head lead over the world number 110 by 4-0. Recently, the two contested against one other in the first round of the Generali Ladies Linz in 2011. Bondarenko
withdrew from the match due to injury, gifting the Jankovic a free entry in the second round.
Next in line for Jankovic is the Spanish tennis professional, Lara Arruabarrena Vecino, who defeated the Israeli Shahar Peer in the first round of the Grand Slam Championship.
