Jelena Jankovic overwhelms Yulia Putintseva in the second round clash – e-Boks Open 2012
Currently rated at number 20 in the world rankings, Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic registered an assertive straight sets victory over the 17-year-old bleak Russian, Yulia Putintseva, in the second round of the e-Boks Open. The contest
was played on the indoor hard courts of Copenhagen, Denmark, on Thursday, with the third seed Serbian closing out the match at 6-3, 6-1, to book a spot in the quarter-finals.
The world number 171, Putintseva, hung in the contest for just 73 minutes before submitting to the fury of the former world number in the end. Jankovic spared four games in the entire matchup for the Russian teenager and kept sweeping
the games in quick succession to stamp her authority over the game. The 27-year-old Serbian veteran had a steady start to the contest but once getting into his winning groove, Jankovic never turned back. She was absolutely unplayable in the second set and
bagged victory comprehensively with a breadstick.
"I think I played really well today," Jankovic said after registering her 14th victory of the running season. "It was not an easy match, and I'm very happy to be through to the next round. I felt good on the court and
it was nice to be hitting the ball well."
Although Jankovic cited that it was not an easy win for her, the final score line clearly depicts the level of dominance the Serbian had over Putintseva on Thursday. She crafted 11 break points in the matchup and converted six
opportunities to rout her opponent, who registered just two out of two break points to finish on the losing side. A total of 97 points were played in the entire matchup, with Jankovic winning 58 and Putintseva lagging far behind with just 39 points.
Jankovic will have to go through the fifth seeded Estonian contender, Kaia Kanepi, in the round of eight on Friday. Kanepi had a rough rind in the second round battle against the unseeded Hungarian youngster, Timea Babos, eventually
winning in the final set tie-breaker round, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(2). She will face on Jankovic for a place in the semis of the e-Boks Open.
