Jelena Jankovic reaches round two; courtesy to Shuai Peng’s withdrawal - Paribas Luxembourg Open 2012
World number 22, Jelena Jankovic, didn’t break a sweat to clear the opening round of the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open on Tuesday. She was up against the 39th ranked Chinese superstar, Shuai Peng, who lasted just three
games in the match before retiring from the contest due to a right shoulder injury that was hampering her game play and more importantly didn’t want to hurt the damaged shoulder anymore.
The unfortunate event occurred when the 27-year-old Serb was leading the opening set scores by 3-0 courtesy two back-to-back breakthroughs. Jankovic expected a tough battle from the 26-year-old Chinese as she was found stating
something before the start of the encounter. She commented, “It's going to be a tough match. In Cincinnati this summer, I lost 7-6 in the third after having many match points against her. Every match is different. I have to try to play my game and learn from
the mistakes I made last time. We'll see how it goes.”
Now, the three games contest didn’t stop Jankovic from stating, “Even though I played only three games, I played pretty well, hitting my shots and concentrating very well, but unfortunately my opponent couldn't continue. It's never
nice to win that way, but that's just the way it was.” It looks like the Serb is extremely satisfied by her game and looks to threaten the upcoming competitors.
Andrea Petkovic from Germany is looking to gain form and get back in the business area in the recent times after incurring such a major injury that kept her out of action for most of the season. She will lock horns with the Spanish
qualifier, Garbine Muguruza, in the first round and the winner will meet the third seed Serb, Jankovic. It will be interesting to see how the former world number one will respond to the second round queries of her rival. It will most probably be the German
superstar but considering the lack of her form anything is possible.
Other two top seeds also registered victories on Tuesday. Roberta Vinci (1) and Julia Goerges (2) defeated their respective rivals to book a spot in the second round.
