Jelena Jankovic scarps through Vera Dushevina into the third round – French Open 2011
Tenth seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic breezed past Russian Vera Dushevina in straight sets to advance into the third round of the 2011 Roland Garros, second of the fourth Grand Slam held in Paris, France. She registered a 6-3, 6-2
success in seventy-nine minutes on Wednesday.
A former world number one, Jankovic earned a straight set victory against a former world number thirty one, Dushevina on their seventh meeting. The Serb reached semi-finals here three times in the last four years and after this
victory, she extended her lead in the head-to-head series by 6-1 against the Russian.
World number ten, Jankovic stormed into the opening set and held her opening serve superbly. She lost her serve early on but held her remaining serve with her blistering forehands. The Serb produced slightly lower number of unforced
errors i.e. 10 to Dushevina’s 12, and an acceptable first serve share of 66 percent. She also registered a convincing 64 percent win on it and eventually edged past the Russian by converting two out of five breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to pocket
a 6-3 win.
The in-form Serb raised her level of game in the final set and despite clobbering a lower first serve share of 50 as opposed to Dushevina’s 67 percent, she earned a spectacular 82 percent win on it. Jankovic smashed three ferocious
aces and showed her nerves of steel by breaking Russian’s serve three times to bag the set with an assuring 6-2 win. She saved one out of two breakpoints saved and converted three out of five breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
26-year-old Serb was in great shape from February to April this season after making semi-final berths at Dubai, Doha and Charleston and reached the final at Monterrey. This month she made a quarter-final berth at Rome but lost
from early rounds at Madrid and Brussels before entering Stade Roland Garros.
24-year-old Dushevina’s from on the other hand is steamed up this season. She hadn’t progressed further than the second round of any tournament this year and carried her losing way at this WTA Slam. She downed Australian Jelena
Dokic in troublesome three set thriller in the opening round match but eventually showed her true form in this match.
Up next for the Serb is the American Bethanie Mattek-Sands who reached this spot after overpowering Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja and her countrywoman Varvara Lepchenko in three set thrillers in the first two rounds.
