Jelena Jankovic stuns Samantha Stosur in the first round brawl – Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2013
Opening round of Porsche Tennis Grand Prix witnessed a surprise outcome when the 18th ranked Serbian, Jelena Jankovic, outclassed the world number nine, Samantha Stosur, on Wednesday. The battle lasted for one hour and
36 minutes before Jankovic drove the sixth seeded Australian out of the tournament in twin sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Jankovic stepped upon the clay courts of Stuttgart, Germany, with confidence, as she had defeated Stosur in their last two encounters. Her Wednesday’s victory extended her head-to-head lead to 5-2 against the 29-year-old Aussie
veteran. She has already won a WTA championship title this season and looking very positive to grab another one at Stuttgart.
"Sam plays very well on clay and she beat me at the French Open, so of course I expected a tough match," Jankovic said. "In the first few games her kick serve was giving me some trouble as it pulled me out of the court, but I felt
that if I got a decent return in, I was in good shape for the point. It's great to win against a Top 10 player because it's my goal to be back there. Each win gives me more confidence and the motivation to work even harder. I'm enjoying tennis again - I want
to be here, I want to compete, and I'd really like that blue Porsche - it would match my blue tennis shoes. There's room in my garage."
The contest took off in a steady manner, with both veterans holding their serves in the opening eight games. Jankovic finally had a vital break opportunity in the ninth game and she cashed it in to break into a 5-4 lead. She eventually
claimed the set at 6-4 in the next game.
With a set in her bag, Jankovic started to play more aggressively in the following set and managed to break Stosur early. She quickly imposed a 3-1 lead and never gave a chance to the sixth seeded Aussie to recover. The Serbian
veteran concluded victory at 6-4, moving into the second round of the tournament in style.
Jankovic will take on the unseeded home favourite, Sabine Lisicki, in the next round.
