Jelena Jankovic undoes Chanelle Scheepers in easy straights at the 2011 Family Circle Cup
Serbian tennis player Jelena Jankovic scored an easy victory over Chanelle Scheepers at this year’s Family Circle Cup, vaulting over the player to reach the quarterfinals at Charleston. Scheepers, who is South African, did her
best but could not keep up with the former World Number 1 who undid her in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. The match lasted just a little over one hour and twenty-minutes, before Jankovic sent Scheepers home.
Jelena Jankovic is currently ranked World Number 8, and has spent a sizable amount of time in the Women’s Tennis Association Top 10. She is 26 years old, and has managed to ascend to the top position of World Number 1 over the
course of her career. She joined the Tour in 2000 at the age of fifteen, and has been playing consistently since then. She already has twelve WTA career titles under her belt. She has recorded some high-profile runs over many of the top players on the WTA
Tour, and is known to be one of the most formidable and unpredictable players.
Scheepers, on the other other hand, is ranked almost seventy spots lower as World Number 80. She is one year older than Jankovic, and has been playing as a pro for quite some time now. She is right-handed, and currently resides
in South Africa. Scheepers is yet to win a career title. She has not made an impression on the Tour so far, and it seems as if she is destined to the ‘minor leagues’ of tennis for the majority of her career. The player has recorded some ITF wins, but a WTA
title has so far eluded her.
Jankovic proved pundits right with her performance against Scheepers, scoring two aces against the pro and double faulting just once. She was broken twice during the match, but took revenge on her opponent by successfully converting
six of a total of ten break points throughout the match. In addition to this, the player also forced Scheepers to give up several easy shots by exhausting her throughout the match. All in all, the meeting was not a challenging one for Jankovic as she raced
ahead to a 6-2, 6-2 win over the South African pro.
Their head-to-head record is now 2-0 to Jelena Jankovic, who defeated Scheepers earlier this year at the Dubai tournament in straight sets to reach the round of the last 16.
Jankovic is seeded third at the Family Circle Cup, and will take on American pro Christina McHale in the quarterfinals of the Charleston event. McHale ousted tenth seed Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets to reach this stage of
the tournament.
