Are these jellyfish a danger to humans and where are they coming from? Is it only the Costa Del Sol that is affected.

I have just got back from Malaga, and there were quite a few jellyfish in the sea which were pink/red.

How dangerous are these jellyfish? There were no warnings put out on the beach.

  1. No the whole of the coast of spain getsthem I used to live in Murcia region and they were a menace there,,,,don`t let them sting you or even touch you they will leave a rash/scar for ages.....very nasty

  2. I live on the Costa Del Sol and have never seen any, but there again I don't often swim in the sea too often. I have heard reports of them though.

The worst area to swim in concerning jelly fish is on the southwest coast of Scotland in the sea in the Solway Firth. I've seen people get stung by Portugese-men-war and it is very painful, but there again I've avoided them.

I guess it's like everything, just take care whilst swimming.

  3. The jellyfish are a nuisance, but far more serious is the weaver fish, which bury themselves in the sand, and if they sting you can cause all sorts of problems and hospital is the only place to go. There are warnings in all the local papers which are freely available.

  4. Part of the being in the ocean.

Look out for the blue edged Portuguese man-o-war at the surface, it's very bad. All the rest in the med are painful (like wasps or nettles) but you might get an allergic reaction. So best to avoid.

I did a triathlon through a swarm of jellyfish, a lot of people got treatment. I didn't. It depends on the person.

Sometimes just the shock of being stung is enough to make it serious if your scared of them.

Ignore all this advice if your swimming on the SW coast of OZ. But before the jellyfish the sharks and crocs will have gotten you.

  5. i went to the costa dorada last year and saw loads of little jellyfish in the sea where i was swimming so i dont think they're dangerous.
