Jemma Lowe wins silver medal in 200m butterfly at 2011 British Gas Swimming Championship
Jemma Lowe has won a silver medal in the 200m butterfly final at the 2011 British Gas Swimming Championships held at the Manchester Aquatics Centre. The championship will conclude on March 12 with the selection of Britain’s Swimming team for the 2011 Shanghai
World Championships.
Lowe had previously won a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly at the championship. She is also a bronze medallist for the 100m butterfly at the Commonwealth Games last year. With her performance in the 200m butterfly, she booked a spot in Britain’s Swimming
Team for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
Lowe was not feeling 100 percent during the Women’s 200m butterfly heat, but she still made her way to the semi-finals in a time of 2:12.26 minutes. Her time was way outside the world qualifying mark.
In the semi-finals, she gathered herself together and qualified for the finals in an effort, which was just under the world qualification time. She drove her way to the silver medal, finishing well behind the championship’s butterfly specialist, Ellen Gandy.
In 2010, she also won a bronze medal in the 200m butterfly at the 10th FINA Short Course World Championships in Dubai, in a time of 2:06.94 minutes.
Lowe stayed in America for two years to attend an extensive training programme. She then made an appearance at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, where she won a bronze medal and then returned to her country after her participation in the Dubai Championship.
The 20-year-old Lowe was extremely happy with her performance and she aims to win a medal at the 2011 World Championships. She claims to adopt more extensive training programmes to enhance her performance at the World Championships which will lead to her
selection for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Lowe said, “Everyone dreams of getting a medal at the World Championships because you have got the whole world watching. I’ll be putting in the training now to see if I can make that podium.”
On reaching her previous best time, she uttered that she was not sure that she will ever reach her time again. She is very comfortable and delighted with her performance. The 200m butterfly podium was completed with the presence of Jessica Dickons in the
third spot, who finished the race in a timing of 2:10.96 minutes.
On the other hand, Dickons was also very happy to book her place for the World event, this August. While expressing her happiness being selected, she said, “My aim was just to get the time for the World Student Games.”
She only needed a time of 2:11.5 minutes to qualify for the championship and her time of 2:10.96 minutes was well suitable for her qualification.
