Jemma Schlicht and Andrew Walker dominate swimming events – Australian State Age Championships
Jemma Schlicht of Victoria and Andrew Walker of Western Australia impressed in the semi-finals of 50m freestyle swims in their respective age groups, on the second day of 2011 Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships. The meet took place on
September 18, at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra.
Schlicht, who occupied second fastest qualification spot in preliminary rounds, posted a top ranked time of 25.92 seconds in the semi-final of Girls 13-14 years old class. With her phenomenal effort, she easily overwhelmed the effort of her strongest competitor,
Candice Wall of Western Australia, who was 0.17 seconds slower than Schlicht and clocked a time of 26.09 seconds.
Later, Schlicht’s team-member, Lucy Soden earned third qualifying position in the final rounds as she submitted a nice time of 26.28 seconds. She was followed by Lauren Rettie of Queensland, who remained just a touch away from Soden and ended her swim in
a time of 26.31 seconds.
In the meantime, Walker claimed the fastest qualification spot of equivalent event in Boys 14-15 years old category. Walker reported on the finishing wall with a top fastest time of 23.42 seconds and remained just 0.04 seconds ahead of Jack Currie of Victoria,
who finished his swim in 23.46 seconds.
Jayke Rees of New South Wales was the third fastest swimmer of the event, as he stayed 0.11 seconds slower than his former finisher and completed his swim in a time of 23.57 seconds. Rees was just 0.02 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Ryan Parker
of Queensland, as he produced a time of 23.59 seconds to enter the final.
Subsequently, Bria Throssell of Western Australia excelled in the same event of Girls 15-16 years old group. Throssell won the hearts of her fans, by touching the wall in a best time of 25.19 seconds. She was trailed by Leanne Wright of New South Wales,
who remained 0.21 seconds slower than her former finisher and entered the final as the second fastest swimmer with a timing of 25.40 seconds. She was followed by Carla Buchanan of Queensland and Je Liimatainen of New South Wales, who completed their swims
in third and fourth place with timings of 25.43 and 25.61 seconds, respectively.
Similarly, Cameron McEvoy of Queensland conquered top position of the event in the Boys 16-17 years old category, with a timing of 22.23 seconds. His team-members, Andrew Digby and Zac Whenuaroa were the second and third qualifiers, as they clocked timings
of 22.51 and 22.83 seconds, respectively.
Furthermore, these competitors will race each other in the final round, where the top two finishers will be awarded medals and accolades.
