Question:

Jenn-Air CVE3400B Cooktop Wiring?

I am planning a kitchen remodel for my family. We have family get-togethers approximately twice a month and the slide-in electric stove (Maytag MER5730AAW) is not enough cooktop space. I acquired two Jenn-Air (Maytag) CVE3400B electric- cooktop-downdrafts that are perfect for the kitchen since we rarely use the oven (maybe once a year). Here are the specs.

Maytag MER5730AAW sticker:

3 wire - 1 phase - 60 Hz AC only

120/240V 120/208V

10.4Kw 7.8 Kw

Jenn-Air (Maytag) CVE3400B

3 wire - 1 phase - 60 Hz AC only

120/240V 120/208V

7.0Kw 5.3Kw

Questions:

1) Would I be able to use the existing wiring?

2) If yes, Can I split the existing to 2 seperate boxes for each of the cooktops?

  1. No you cannot use existing wiring, unless you want kitchen fire... LOL.  Also, downdrafts are designed for pre-wired circuits.  You need an exhaust for any downdraft.   If your plans include a TOTAL remodel then, yes, the 2 cook tops will be wired to be sufficient.  Make sure you have at least 1 oven to bake in, if needed.

  2. No.  Your supply to the range area is sized for the existing range.  Even if you discount the oven, you are unlikely to have sufficient capacity in the breaker or the supply line.  Run a new, properly sized supply line connected to a new breaker for the two new cooktops.
