Jennie Johansson seizes Women’s 50m breast-stroke crown: Day two – 2011 Swimming World Cup, Stockholm
Jennie Johansson of Sweden made her present felt to the aquatic world by winning the crown of Women’s 50m breast-stroke on the final day of the 2011 Swimming World Cup in Stockholm, on October Sunday, 16.
The two-day Stockholm event is the second leg of the World Cup series organised by international aquatics sport governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
The 23-year-old Johansson devastated hopes of her competitors and proved her eligibility for the crown of short course breast-stroke discipline. She experienced a severe competition from her opponents, who were eyeing the title of the event, but her thrilling
efforts placed her on the top of podium for gold medal.
Johansson’s perfect start provided her a marginal lead over her competitors and she became evident for the gold medal. The 23-year-old adopted a gruelling strategy of short and powerful strokes, which played a vital role in cementing her place on the top
of podium.
With her immaculate efforts, she denied ruthless efforts of her opponents and hit the wall with a superb timing of 30.05 seconds for gold medal. Her fantastic timing was 2.25 seconds slower than the championship and world record of American swimmer, Jessica
Hardy, who clocked a phenomenal time of 28.80 seconds for gold medal in 2009.
Johansson was trailed by Hye Jin Kim of Korea, who struggled hard to overwhelm the efforts of her former swimmer, but failed to achieve so. Kim remained 0.53 seconds slower from the gold medallist and stepped on the podium for silver medal by producing a
nice time of 30.58 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Katharina Stiberg of Norway, who was just 0.71 seconds slower than her preceding swimmer and secured the podium for bronze medal by clocking a time of 31.29 seconds.
Johansson expressed happiness over her tremendous win while the crowd also appreciated her commendable efforts in the 50m breast-stroke. Furthermore, the winners were invited on the medal rostrum for their accolades after the completion of the session.
